Personality:
At first glance, Lance doesn't make a particularly good impact. He's the most obvious fronter in the world, boasting about his good looks and flirting with anyone he deems a favorable girl. He makes crass jokes with his friends, he's insufferably sarcastic, and he whines about pretty much every inconvenience. The worst part of all of it is that he seems strangely proud of these things.

But that doesn't necessarily mean that's how he really is. On the surface, he shows an attitude that makes you want to slap him, but undearneath, he's actually a very well-rounded individual. He's perceptive both physically and emotionally, able to sense when his lion was watching him when they found it, and able to keep his mind clear in battle when they were at risk of hurting the Balmera. He's determined, willing to do whatever is needed of him in any serious situation, and empathetic to his friends' problems.

What holds him back from showing this, however, is easily his worst trait: his shallow nature. He's incredibly vain, and that can cloud his good qualities. For example, it's easily assumed that his simple definitions of male and female keep him from being able to see that Pidge is actually a girl, and his willingness to jump at even the slightest positive attention from a pretty girl gets him chained to a tree for an entire fight.

He's aware of the problems he faces in himself, as well; he's determined to prove that he's good enough to be there. He was only given a shot at his dream job because of Keith's flunking out of the Garrison, and he's noted on multiple occasions that he feels he holds the team back in ways. He doesn't think he has much special about him, at least in a "chosen to save the universe" context. He struggles with this frequently, and it's shown to be a sore spot.

To make things worse for him, he has a tendency toward jealousy. Noted, this is only particularly directed at one person, but the feeling in regards to Keith is one of the most intense things he feels on a regular basis; he's consistently bent on one-upping him, putting him down about the things he's good at, and making fun of his appearance. Next to the urge to hit on the ladies, it's the most common thing he acts on in the series. Between the two complexes (both likely stemming from various problems growing up in the very large family he has at home), his virtues remain hidden until the going gets rough.

Ultimately, he does have a good heart. It's because of this that his other qualities can shine through; when things are serious, so is Lance. Any time anything gets beyond the scope of his sarcasm-as-defense, his mind clears and his decision-making is sound. He's a good pilot, an incredible marksman, and once you get to know him, he proves that under pressure, there's no one better to depend on.

Skills/Abilities: He's learning how to be better skilled at close combat, but Lance is an amazing shot with a rifle! Otherwise his best skill is knowing ridiculous beauty tips and bad pickup lines.

Third Person Sample:

Lately, things have just... been hard for Lance. He won't say it, of course, but with all the drama going on in their lives right now, Zarkon hot on their tails and Keith's past coming to light... He feels like it's so much bigger than him. Like he'll crack under the pressure, like he'll fail when everything is critical, and it'll be his fault when the universe falls.

That's why, when he comes through the portal, and the wave of confusion and panic and apologetic explanations subside and leave him on the street, the first thing he feels is a guilty wave of relief. He's got his feet on the ground, no armor, no bayard, no void of space... For a moment, when it hits him, he actually feels free. He's in a different universe, he can't do anything about it until the locals figure it out. This place is full of magic, kids practicing on the street--it's a little urban paradise. He doesn't have to be a paladin here.

The realization flows through him like water down a riverbed. It starts in his head, and washes out everything else. It travels through his heart, and picks up the faces of liberated planets, and Pidge's concentrated face, and Hunk's laugh, Shiro's gentle tone, Keith's rare smile. It drags Coran's positivity and Allura's determination through his stomach, and ends below his ankles, spilling his bond with Blue onto the concrete and anchoring his feet to the sidewalk.

For several seconds, Lance stares at the ground a few feet ahead of him, eyebrows knitting together while he processes what he's doing. Running? From fate, from his destiny, from the life he committed to? That he was forced to commit to, that's weighted him down, that's forced him to grow beyond what he thought possible in such a short time.... It's been a burden, and one he knows he wasn't ready for, but he can't sit here and tell himself he hasn't risen to the challenge.

He brings his hands up, digs the heels into his eyes for a moment, and scrubs at his face. Then he throws his hands down again, and takes a deep breath. He can't stay here. He can't let his team down, he can't let the universe down. He has to find a way back, even if it means letting the locals experiment on him until they get it right. He'll make it back in as many pieces as it takes, and he'll deliver a swift kick to the Galra Empire's collective behind.

With a renewed determination, Lance starts off toward the shelter he was directed to again. First thing's first: get as much information as possible. If there's a way off this world, he's gonna find it.

And if he has a little fun on the way, nobody'll blame him. The place is pretty magical.
